Is it starting to get hot where you live or have you already been sweltering? Maybe you live on the side of the planet that’s cooling off. With the heat wave planned for NYC, this weekend is going to be a HOT one! So where are you going birding this weekend? Comment below on the excitement you have planned!
My family will be holding court in the mighty Bronx Zoo; while I shy away from birds in cages, there are often interesting birds in the area. Charlie, fresh off a week of Cape Town and Wales, is going to try to catch up with some common British summer breeding birds he still hasn’t managed to see yet this year – Common Tern, Hobby, Cuckoo, and Sedge Warbler – by going to the Cotswold Water Park. Sounds refreshing! Corey will, of course, be birding in Queens, probably Jamaica Bay, but taking a novice birding friend along. But he’ll also be heading to Doodletown Road with a couple of Queens birders… Cerulean Warblers, here he comes!
While gearing up to watch the skies this weekend, be sure to indulge in Sky Watch Friday…
Watch the skies for wonderful waders, like this Tricolored Heron (photo by Mike)
Hello from the cornfields of Brookville, Ohio where it is hot and muggy and only 7:10 AM.
I have enjoyed taking a look at your post for Sky Watch Friday. I like your photography. The Heron is beautiful.
Hello from Syney, Australia 🙂 The only bird cooler than a White Ibis in flight must be an Tricoloured Heron! Haven’t found your skywatch post yet but I was planning travelling South to a place which has Treetop Walkway this long weekend. Just contemplating whether to wait until Spring because it’s 2 degrees Celsius there right now!
OOOPS, just found your Skywatch photo and this is it! HAHA!!! Have a greatweekend, and I’m from Sydney (bad keyboarder I am)
After over 8 inches of rain, I hope to see the fork-tailed flycatcher seen daily since 31may here in central Indiana. See the rare bird alerts for directions. This is a first Indiana record – the nearest sighting was 1834 in Henderson KY by JJ Audubon himself!!
Greetings from the eastern part of Finland!
your photo was surprisingly fine “skywatcher” photo 🙂
I have some photos about The Common Merganser, (Goosander in Europe), Mergus merganser, The Whooper Swan (Cygnus cygnus) and Common Cranes (Grus grus), in my post of Monday, June 02, 2008, if you are interested.
Happy weekend to you!
Greetings from the northern part of Portugal, that little country who’s neighbour is Spain 🙂
Fantastic photo.
Thanks, A.L. This weekend is shaping up to be our first truly hot one.
Glad you figured that out, Anonybird! You know, we have White Ibis here in North America as well – cracking birds.
Good luck, MikeC. Fork-tailed fly is a splendid bird. I think I missed all my shots at them for the year unless one turns up way off course.
Leena, love your blog. You should consider submitting your crane post to I and the Bird. Speaking of which, Anonybird, I bet you have some ideal ones for our birding blog carnival as well.
Probably the Ft. Worth Nature Center. Over 5000 acres, with swamps. woodlands and prairies. I hope to photograph the Indigo Buntings that we have been seeing there.
Have a great birding weekend,
Troy and Martha
Right now I’m birding online! Thanks for this great shot.
wonderful catch, excellent.
Nice Tri-colored heron. Usually you see blues! I am biriding in Cave Creek Canyon near Portal, AZ this weekend with my husband Gus. We are celebrating our 31st Anniversary this way. I have never been there, so I am excited! Of course, a blogpost will follow!
Beautiful bird! That’s really a good shot.
Thanks for asking, I’m thinking of a day trip up the Jemez River in Northern New Mexico. A riparian area that goes from about 6000 to 8000 feet elevation. I hope to end up in the Valle Calderas area to find the elusive 3-toed Woodpecker.
Me, I’ll be birding in my classroom as I’m doing final grades. Oh, I’ll probably manage a little birding in my kitchen as I put the rest of my stuff away in there. If I’m very lucky, I’ll bird a tiny bit by my MIL’s pool. I suspect I’ll see Ravens, Crows, California Towhees, Chestnut-backed Chickadees, Dark-eyed Juncos, House finches, Lesser Goldfinches, Steller’s Jays (BABIES!)and that is it. But, school ends next week and I’ll be able to bird outside my own backyard soon, very soon!
Many thanks,Sandy, Daniel, and Steven and Aisha.
Troy, that sounds superb. I’ve done Dallas but not Ft. Worth. Anyplace with Indigo Buntings is worth a trip.
Kathie, that’s quite a way to celebrate 31 years of marriage! Tricolored and Little Blue are rare but regular in the New York Metro area but extremely common in the Everglades, where I caught that shot.
BosqueBill, I’m jealous. Hope you spot that difficult bird; it’s funny how you can find it at high altitudes in NM when in this part of the country, we pretty much have to go to Canada for a shot at one.
Liza Lee, have I told you yet how charming that pink poodle gravatar is?
The Big Year calls. I’m looking for Bachman’s Sparrow and Scissor-tailed Flycatcher in the Sandhills this weekend. That is, if the heat doesn’t knock me out…
Your heron photo is great . I can never get enough of them – but they seem to fly away so fast.
We’re supposed to get hot here, too, in Western Mass tomorrow. I’m going birding/sketching/painting around the Quabbin Reservoir as early as possible, hope to find cerulean and maybe canada warbler, and there’s been black-billed cuckoo reported. All three would fill gaps in my life list. Have a great weekend birding, everyone!
Those are some serious targets, Nate. Wish I was there!
Thanks, Diane. Florida is a great place to get photos of herons in flight because there’s just so many of them.
Good luck with those birds, Debby. Can’t wait to see those sketches. It’s been a long time since I’ve seen a black-billed cuckoo.
What a beautiful bird! We have blue and white herons here, but I have never seen a multi-colored one.
I do most of my birdwatching in my backyard. Unfortunately, I haven’t had as many visitors since I changed bird seed types. My birds apparently prefer Lowe’s seed to Wal-Mart’s. 😀
Always a pleasure to drop by here while doing Sky Watch and see who for where is watching out for which bird.. LOL… what a mouthful that was to say :O)
Another great picture for Sky Watch.. cheers
I am heading over to the Sussex County Birding and Nature Festival in Vernon NJ tomorrow. Today (Sat) I have a class. 🙁
I’m going to try to get out to Sauvie Island, Oregon to see if I can locate the Clay-colored Sparrow reported to be there.
wonderful photo
okay, it’s too hot for birding. I’m going to the beach instead…oh, wait, there are birds there too?
