If you haven’t noticed, the holidays are upon us. Don’t worry… there’s still time to panic! But Yuletide celebrations herald more than just egg nog, latkes, and Secret Santa swaps. One of the historic highlights of this season for bird watchers is the Christmas Bird Count! Are you participating in any CBCs this year?
I’m headed down to NYC this weekend, where I have a date with a Bronx Barnacle Goose. That bird better be there when I arrive! Corey is in California, where he has a date with Seagull Steve, biographer of the infamous Felonious Jive. How about you? Where will you be this weekend and will you be birding? Share your plans in the comments below.
Whatever your plans this weekend, make time to enjoy SkyWatch Friday. Also be sure to come back Monday to share your best bird of the weekend!
Sunrise over Bang Pra in Bangkok
(Can you believe how many brilliant birds Duncan saw in just one morning during his layover here?)
lovely photo!
I’m heading for Busch Wildlife Area in St. Charles, MO, for 62nd Weldon Spring Christmas Bird Count. My target is a LeConte’s Sparrow in the grassy field by the wetland. I hope the weather improves!
I’ll be heading up area 10 of the Sacramento CBC. It is a great area with open fields for raptors and Horned Larks (hoping for longspurs). It also has a big chunk of Central Valley riparian along the Sacramento River.
So far, I think my only birding opps will be from the windows of a Metro-North train from NYC to Putnam County, NY. (Mike, when might you be heading to Van Cortlandt? No promises, but I could try to eke out a side trip.)
Meredith, e-mail me. If you’re taking the Hudson Line on Saturday morning, I can pick you up at Spuyten Duyvil for a quick run at the goose.
