Oh no… the winter doldrums have overtaken me. I cannot abide the idea of bundling up and dragging my carcass through the snow in hopes of seeing something better than robins and starlings. I think Corey may feel the same way, since he’s not planning any ambitious birding this weekend either. How about you? Who’s winning: you or winter? How will you be spending this weekend and could you possibly be birding? Share your plans in the comments below!
Whatever your plans this weekend, make time to enjoy SkyWatch Friday. Also be sure to come back Monday to share your best bird of the weekend!
Lovely skies over Lake Perris in California by Corey Finger
Fantastic sky.
this really is a gorgeous photo.
Well, I don’t want to make anyone jealous or anything, but this Saturday, on the west coast, in California, it’s predicted to be 70 degrees and sunny 😉 I will be heading out to Sacramento National Wildlife Refuge with a birding group from Wintu Audubon. It’s hard to say what my best bird may be. A dark morph “Blue” Snow Goose, Eurasian Wigeon or Barrow’s Goldeneye perhaps? We will undoubtedly see Great Horned Owl, Peregrine Falcon, Northern Harrier and Bald Eagle. I get excited whenever I see a White-tailed Kite! I’ll report back on Monday.
I’ll be birding locally around Heidelberg – again.
Which means Hawfinches, Long-tailed Tits, and Back Woodpeckers – again.
Sigh. What would I give for something exciting, like a House Finch or a Mockingbird…
I will be busy with family stuff but will at least see some garden birds (Blue gray Tanager, Clay-colored Thrush, BLue-crowned Motmot, etc) when we visit friends tomorrow who live near Grecia, Costa Rica.
I’ll be covering the Upper Gulf Coast of Texas starting at High Island and working my way down to San Luis Pass and ending up at Texas City Dyke. Hoping for my 1st 100 species day of the year. Hoping to see Prairie Warbler, Vermillion Flycatcher, Sabines Gull, Sage Thrasher, White-tailed Hawk, Scoters and Mergansers. Weather should be cool, sunny and clear, in other words, perfect for birding and photography. Will let you know the results.
Yeah, those Black Woodpeckers can really start to wear on you, Jochen! 🙂
