An arctic blast of cold has served notice to many Americans that winter will still deliver the chills, at least intermittently. Frankly, I’m in favor of a more balmy season to string together fall and spring, but the best winter birds like it cold. Maybe I should just commit to being a snowbird and spend my winters somewhere warm like Florida. Then I could visit exciting locations like Hospital Key in the Dry Tortugas, depicted above by James Currie. Hospital Key, where azure sky blends into turquoise sea, happens to be the only nesting site for Masked Boobies in the U.S. I want to be there. Don’t you?
This weekend, both Corey and I will be toughing it out in our respective latitudes. I’m about ready to see some owls like everyone else around here seems to do. How about you? Where will you be this weekend and will you be birding? Share your plans in the comments below.
Whatever your plans this weekend, make time to enjoy SkyWatch Friday. Also be sure to come back Monday to share your best bird of the weekend!
Great post, perfect for SWF!
Great shot.
beautiful
The U.S. has several Masked Booby nesting sites….just not in the ABA Area (yet!!!).
I’m going to go to Monterey tomorrow to get a stupid state bird. Not that Arctic Loons aren’t awesome.
I had been to Dry Tortugas NP and it looks exactly like in the picture. But. I am novice in identifying the birds. Also, many of the isles in DTNP are not accessible to visitors.
