Anyone who knows me knows my favorite kind of birding: vacation birding. Enjoy your patches and your resident breeders. I’ll take new birds in new habitat any day. I’ve always loved traveling, but never as much as now when I can truly understand a place by learning about its birds and how they connect to other avifauna across the world. Plus, ever since I started listing, I stopped feeling the need to buy souvenirs!
The reason I mention vacation birding is that I’m headed down to Virginia Beach this weekend for sun, sand, and who knows what else. I’ve birded that part of the United States more than a couple of times but nonetheless look forward to the constant pelicans and Purple Martins! Corey is stuck in New York, but when you see the birds he does on a weekly basis, you’ve always got that vacation feeling.
How about you? Where will you be this weekend and will you be birding? Share your plans in the comments below.
Whatever your plans this weekend, make time to enjoy SkyWatch Friday. Also be sure to come back Monday to share your best bird of the weekend!
Gorgeous shot.
I usually don’t enjoy going after “target birds,” even less so twitching, because those activities almost always seem to end with frustration. However, this weekend, on the way to visit family in Southern California, I will visit Andrew Molera State Park and go on one of the Ventana Wildlife Society’s tours to view California Condors. They use radio telemetry to find the birds, so I expect a better result. 😉
After that I will hop over to Santa Cruz Island to see the Jay. But, I shouldn’t mention that here, because it will be on a Tuesday.
really beautiful… great skywatch shot.
