Spring has sailed and soon summer will begin in earnest. Get your birding kicks while you can. Those of us in the Northern Hemisphere can look out for cute, fuzzy baby birds while folks south of the Equator should start laying in supplies for winter! What are you doing this weekend and will you be birding? Share your plans in the comments below.
Corey will, as usual, be kicking around the NYC Metro area, hoping to hitch a ride out east to look for good birds in Suffolk County, Long Island. Charlie will return to Great Chalfied after his triumphant tour of the Bavarian Alps. To the great envy of many of you, I’m on my way to one of the most legendary birding locations in all of Central America, the magnificent Canopy Tower in Panama. Wish me luck!
Whatever your plans this weekend, make time to enjoy SkyWatch Friday. Also be sure to come back Monday to share your best bird of the weekend!
I’m heading to Idaho’s South Hills – a cluster of mountains and canyons south of Twin Falls Idaho. It is a way under-explored area which has in the last few years begun an annual bird census in mid-June. Idaho rarities are regularly found during the census, so I am hoping to see some good Idaho birds while participating.
Is that really Italy? I’d think Austria.
The weather is supposed to improve here in Vancouver, and I may crawl out of my jetlag cave to see what’s stirring in the neighborhood.
Fabulous mountains! This weekend I will be birding at the local reservoir. Its a great spot to catch up with the waterside birds and you can get up close and personal with the more sociable individuals.
I’ve been busy birding Portal and Payson, AZ for the past 2 weeks so now I am ready to just stay home and see what shows up in my local Sycamore Canyon! BTW, baby Gambel’s quail are here today! Have fun in Panama!
This is a very beautiful Scene!!
Galapagos! Again I will not be birding but I will be doing another Galapgos birding blog!
Looks like you had a great view that day. We enjoyed it too.
Fledgling birder that my am, I’m going to try NYC’s Central Park for the first time on Sunday (after doing an anti-rain dance to keep thunderstorms away). Any tips from you experts? I’m excited!
@Meredith: Get there as early as you can (before the tourist crowds) and make sure to scan the edges of the ponds and lakes. Don’t expect too much; with migration over it will tough to see many species.
Hi Mike, I’m in Upstate NY (how boring compared to….) but I did indeed see the warblers you said to be looking for! Also, Joel and I are more “in tune” with bird song and discovered a new sound just yards away- a Great Crested Flycatcher. We’ve also been watching an Eastern Phoebe and have had several opportunities to watch baby Canadian Geese.
Still waiting to see a Cedarwaxwing!
Newbies, I know. But we’re learning and having fun!
Kathy
Thanks Corey! My plan was to start at the Reservoir and head downwards from there. I’m hoping to find at least a few species (even if I can’t see them) that we don’t usually get in my neck of the woods.
@Rick – To quote from the Zugspitze website: “Ambitious sports lovers, sun worshippers, romanticists or nature lovers – on top of Zugspitze at an altitude of just under 3,000 meters (10,000 feet), there’s something to suit everyone’s taste. Experience seven months of snow reliability and panoramic views all the way to the white powdered Dolomite mountains of Italy and the Swiss Alps – supreme winter snow fun in the Zugspitze world of adventure…Let yourself be overwhelmed by the matchless 360° panorama across a total of 400 peaks in 4 different countries.”
The Dolomites are the peaks WAAAY in the distance, but according to the map up on the Zugspitze it is them (and tourist sites never lie as you know 🙂 )
No birding! Footbal World Cup – great matches this weekend!
Just spent 4 days birding the western end of the Gibb River Road in the Kimberleys-105 species! Back in Roebuck Bay birding today & there was a nice flock of 3500 shorebirds despite most being well north of here on their way to breed.
Great S.W.F. photo :).
