Mid-October is a beautiful time of year in most parts of the world. Whatever you plan to do, do it in style. The 3-day weekend many of us in the United States will enjoy should inspire you to go big. You can dream big, play big, even sit big! Whatever you expect to do this weekend, will you be watching birds? Comment below on the excitement you have planned!
I won’t be doing much birding this weekend as I’ll be hosting my mother, sister, brother, niece, and future brother-in-law. They wanted to make it up to Rochester before the snows arrive; I hope they make it! Anyway, I’m also getting ready for next week’s business trip to sunny (it better be sunny) Orange County, CA where I WILL be birding in some capacity. Corey also has family visiting this weekend and doubts much birding will get done, but he does have tentative plans to go to Jones Beach. Charlie, on the other hand, will be getting some brilliant birdwatching in as he visits Kenya. He’ll be meeting with the beneficiaries of our Small African Fellowship for Conservation to disburse funds, equipment, and good cheer while chasing down one of Kenya’s rarest passerines.
Regardless of how you plan to enjoy a lovely weekend, be sure to celebrate Sky Watch Friday…
Keep your eyes peeled for battles between birds of prey like corvids and raptors
(If you’re interested, this square dance in the sky involved a few more steps!)
Outstanding photo. Thanks for sharing.
Cheers

This weekend, I’ll be trying to break my streak of total birding thwartation by biking to the Rockaways and hitting Breezy Point and Fort Tildon (and Plum Beach en route.)
The fact that you’re expecting snow makes me homesick.
Sittin’ big at Catalina State Park, 7 miles north of Tucson.
I will be birding/photographing birds in my yard on Saturday and spending time at one of my favorite stompintg gounds, the hawkwatch at Lake Erie Metropark in wayne County Michigan http://www.smrr.net
lovely photo, I posted a couple of duck photo’s on my blog this week, that may interest you?
Gill in Canada
Still trying to catch that elusive blue Heron who sometimes visits the pond in our park on the farm and dementedly snapping at tiny twittering things I can’t identify with the naked eye. Near Mt.Pleasant,South Australia.
Wow, this is a beautiful site redesign…alhtough it’s funny because I clicked on my blogroll link to see your old site…it always relaxed me…but I was greeted with this really cool theme!
I’ll have to keep in touch more often!
That’s funny, Carrie… the thought just makes me sick.
Nice mallards, Gill.
Rick, Jeff, and Arija – good luck!
Hey Doc Shazam, it’s great to hear from you! It’s been a while, hasn’t it? Thanks for the compliment… Mr. Hassle’s Long Underpants is looking good too.
Wonderful picture!
Charlie wins, I think, for this weekend. I’m birding right here in Michigan, at least part of the time.
And my relatives and friends refuse to visit in the winter, too. Very frustrating.
Nice one, Mike. I’ll be out in the woods in Central Florida, trying to get me some songbirds.
I’ll be birding back down in the Miami-Dade area looking for more migrants. My targets for the weekend include Nashville Warbler, Philadelphia Vireo, and Hill Myna. We’ll see how that goes.
