Three weekends into this new year, I still can’t make sense of it. If you live in the northeastern United States, you may be wondering if you’ll ever see winter again. If you live along the coast of Alaska’s Prince William Sound, on the other hand, you may wonder if you’ll make it to spring!
The birds this year seem to be as unpredictable as the weather, at least in Corey’s immediate vicinity. If the pelagic vessel he’s booked for out of Long Island actually leaves port, I expect reports of New York’s first penguins and prions! I shan’t be leaving terrestrial New York this weekend, but hope to see flocks of rarities turn up at a local sports bar… that might be my only chance of getting any quality birding in. What will you be doing this weekend and where will you be birding? Share your plans in the comments below.
Whatever your plans this weekend, make time to enjoy SkyWatch Friday. Also be sure to come back Monday to share your best bird of the weekend!
Keep your eyes to the skies for stormy weather!
Rain finally rolls into Australia’s Roebuck Bay (photo by Clare Morton)
Northeastern birder here, snow has come! I’m still wondering where the American Tree and White-throated Sparrows are. Haven’t seen a single one this winter.
Portland Oregon is the plan. Roebuck Bay looks a bit more appealing though.
I’m heading to Sax-Zim bog in Northern Minnesota for some northern specialties.
Going to hit a Sydney hotspot, not sure which.
Leading my first birding walk in the Sikome Lake and Hull’s Wood areas of Fish Creek Park on Sunday. Hoping to get some shots of a rare overwintering male Cinnamon Teal that’s been there all week.
I’m surviving rainy weather this weekend and hoping it keeps to a minimum when my daughter and her children arrive for a visit from Sydney! We want to get out!
As for birds, we are getting strange “bird patterns” too with all the grizzly weather! Frequent visitors like kookaburras and rosellas are not so frequent and others like peewees are suddenly appearing! All weird!
Love the photo of skies over seas! Adore seascapes!
great shot
My Skywatch
Ah’m goin’ to yur backyard to mess wid yur friend.
@ Duncan-Sydney Hotspot? When do you go back to NZ….Jochen, Corey and I are concerned about how many species you have got on your list so far this year!! 🙂
@Redgannet: Whoo-hoo!!!
Nice photo =)
I couldn’t feed the birds this winter and I miss them. There are few chances of seeing birds where I live when you don’t bribe them with food.
Good luck with the birding!
Nothing special here just a walk around of a few local parks in Austin, Texas.
@Clare, Corey and Duncan: I win, I win!! My list now stands at 798 for the year as I’ve decided to also count birds I see depicted in a field guide. I am positive I’ll break the 10,000 barrier in a week or so.
Naah, stuck on something around 50 or so. Crappy birding here inland, but the list will kick off propper once the business trips start happening.
This weekend? Heidelberg playgrounds with my son. I have yet to see a Crested Tit for the year.
Wonderful photo with the big rain clouds on the horizon!
Wow!! Fabulous shot.
Penquins in New York, now that would be something. I really, really like the image shared. I had wanted to go to see the Sandhill Cranes at the festival in Hiwassee Wildlife Refuge this weekend, but do to reasons beyond my control, went last weekend instead. I have made 3 posts of that amazing journey since and one more to go. Have a great weekend~
I’ll be on the NYC Audubon’s Winter EcoCruise. I’ll be hoping to see some interesting birds as the boat travels through lower New York Harbor.
Still waiting for winter to arrive in So Cal. Exploring the local arroyo (Arroyo Simi) in an effort to document all the species I can find there.
