We’re almost a month into summer around here and I’m ready to relax. Too bad there’s so much to do in July! Where are you watching birds this weekend? Comment below on the excitement you have planned!
I and a small army of friends and family will, as is our tradition in the third weekend of July, be building an enormous chicken out of wood and hay, stuffing it with fireworks, and lighting it on fire. I don’t suppose any of you will be doing that, will you? Corey plans to roll out the red carpet for rare shorebirds at Jamaica Bay so if you’re a Ruff or avocet in the NYC area, do stop by and say hi. Charlie is off to Abuja, Nigeria with hopes of seeing African Blue Flycatcher and Red-vented Malimbe, what ever a malimbe is.
Whether you’re burning a giant chicken or not, be sure to celebrate Sky Watch Friday…
I am amazed with the bonfire that you have planned. The third weekend of July, eh? Every July? How absolutely wonderful … and just how did this unique tradition commence?
BTW – nice photo!
That looks like a boatload of fun! Good SWF, too!
Cheers, Klaus
Great photo! I would love to see it happen.
That’s quite some bird they are constructing!
Wonderful skywatch pic! It sounds like you have some fun planned! I probably won’t get out this weekend for birding or any nature walks, but hopefully I can make up for it during next week.
An enormous chicken bonfire…sounds amazing. What’s the story behind it?
Great sky, dont know about the bird ever getting up there.
The Team thanks you for your SW photo and helping us in its new venture and making it a success.
“hey dog did you see the size of that chick” name that movie. Nice SWF picture.
That’s an interesting project! Enjoy!
I hope the chicken went of with a bang… this really is a great fun post.. I hope the weekend was a good one and enjoyed by all.
Beautiful shot. Good report. Great blog.
